the transformation

It all started with THIS old bookcase from my parents house
(in trying to move it from the garage to the side of the house…there was an accident and this once sellable bookcase was broken and cracked)
me and my husband LOVING do it yourself projects, saw this as an opportunity to snatch it up, fix it up, and make it our own…
this is how the story goes:
notice how the middle section sticks out like EIGHT inches…TOO much for my liking!
so we quickly went to work cutting down, sanding,
re-cutting, more sanding and a lot of nailing!Did I mention A LOT of sanding?

we then ended up with THIS….to get THIS we:
1-we pulled apart the 3 pieces
2 - took the middle piece and cut down the back (so it didn’t stick out 8 inches)
3 - sanded all the sides (to remove shine and wax for painting)
4 - filled the crack in the back of the right bookcase
5 - pulled off the broken baseboard and replaced with ALL new
6 - pulled off the crown and added ALL new
7 - nailed and screwed it all back together

notice how it only sticks out TWO Inches now? MUCH BETTER!

Then I went hard to work painting the WHOLE thing!!
it took TWO coats of this WONDERFUL new paint HOME DEPOT sells
it is by BEHR and it has the PRIMER already mixed in it!
LOVED saving myself a step of having to prime first!!

as you can see i am not the CLEANEST painter ;)
good thing this are my OFFICIAL painting pants (NOW)

and TA DA with a little decorating this become a BEAUTIFUL new kitchen hutch/bookcase!

Because this bookcase is in my kitchen and you see it right when you walk in my door I wanted to make sure it wasn’t “cluttered” looking.
So made sure to be a minimalist on this project!
For the top center I filled APOTHECARY jars with dried “brown” food products:
Left: Dried Kidney Beans
Center: Dry Brown Rice
Right : Dry Whole Wheat Pasta

as for the sides a just pulled a few things out of my cupboards that I thought could see a little light for a while. I tried to stick with mostly white stuff with a few touches of Brown and gold to warm it up.

Notice the “D” i made using the same tutorial as the BOO letters seen HERE!

and THAT’S it!
we added in a few Halloween decorations and there you have it!
our newly refurbished cabinet
WE LOVE IT!
